dc.description.abstract "Primeiro relato autêntico de um estrangeiro sobre as minas de ouro e diamantes em Minas Gerais. Por intermédio do conde de Linhares, John Mawe, mineralogista inglês e temporariamente administrador da Fazenda Real Santa Cruz, conseguiu a licença - até então negada - de inspeccionar as diversas minas e sua produtividade extrativa. O relato de Mawe satisfez a grande necessidade de informações, sendo este seu trabalho amplamente divulgado através de inúmeras edições e traduções. 'The view of the Jaraguá mining camp is the first landscape document which exists of the interior of São Paulo, as noted by Taunay.' (MORAES, 1958, v. 2, p. 40 apud KOPPEL, 1992, p. 242). Vindo da região do Prata, Mawe visitou a ilha de Santa Catarina, Santos, São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro, antes de partir para Minas Gerais. Seu relato contém ainda notícias sobre o Rio de Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso e o Nordeste brasileiro."--(MORAES, 2010, v. 2, p. 57).
